WASHINGTON, DC -- During tonight’s State
of the Union address, President Obama stressed the importance of
education, innovation, and infrastructure to enable the United States to
compete in a 21st century economy. Below is a statement from Marielena
Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center:
“Tonight, President Obama reminded us that
we are a country of people who dare to dream. Republicans and Democrats
alike should ensure that our country’s destiny remains, ‘our choice,’
and work together to move past the partisan politicking that stymies our
economic progress.
“The President also stressed the importance
of financial restraint today to secure our economic future. However, as
the President rightly acknowledged, such cuts should not come at the
expense of the most vulnerable members of our society. In an effort to
prune extraneous spending from our budget, we must not cut the vital
branches of government upon which people rely to stay healthy and
thrive.
"Our prosperity depends upon secure
investments not only in infrastructure, but in the health, education,
and financial security of all those within our borders. Rather than
turning back the clock on health care reform, we urge the 112th Congress
to work together to ensure that those living and working in our country
are healthy enough to contribute fully to our economy and society.
“President Obama also noted that hundreds
of thousands of undocumented students excelling in our schools who have
the skills and desire to improve our society live every day with the
threat of deportation. This is not only tragic, but also nonsensical.
"Congress should provide these students
with a path to citizenship, and go one step further by legalizing the
parents and fellow community members of these students – the millions of
undocumented men and women who are working and living in America today.
They are a vital component of our plan for full economic recovery.
Throughout our history, immigrants ranging from Albert Einstein to
Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, have developed innovative ideas that
have revolutionized our society. Immigrant entrepreneurs and workers
make our local economies vibrant. We urge President Obama and Congress
to reform our immigration laws so that immigrant families can help build
a stronger nation that is once again able to compete with the rest of
the world.
“As Obama observed, America has been the
story of ordinary people who dare to dream and do big things. Our past,
present, and future relies upon immigrant families who believe in such a
dream and seek to become integrated into our society. We look forward to
working with elected officials and community leaders on both sides of
the aisle to ensure that American values of fairness, equality, and
prosperity remain the cornerstone of our society in the next century and
beyond.”
El ESTADO DE LA UNION: INVIRTAMOS HOY EN EL FUTURO DE NUESTRO PAIS
WASHINGTON, DC -- Durante el discurso ésta noche del Estado de la
Unión, el Presidente Obama recalcó la importancia de la educación,
innovación, e infraestructura para que los Estados Unidos pueda competir
en la economía del siglo 21. La siguiente es una declaración de
Marielena Hincapié, directora ejecutiva del Centro Nacional de Leyes
Migratorias (National Immigration Law Center):
“Esta noche, el Presidente Obama nos recordó que somos un país de
personas que se atreven a soñar. Tanto Republicanos como Demócratas
deben de asegurar que el destino de nuestro país siga siendo ‘nuestra
decisión’ y que trabajen juntos mas allá de la politiquería que está
atrasando nuestro progreso económico.
“El Presidente también recalcó la importancia de restricciones
financieras para asegurar nuestro futuro económico. Sin embargo, como el
Presidente reconoció correctamente, estos recortes no deben de ser a
costa de los integrantes mas vulnerables de nuestra sociedad. En los
esfuerzos para podar los gastos superfluos de nuestro presupuesto, no
debemos de recortar las partes vitales del gobierno en el que la gente
confía para mantenerse saludable y prosperar.
“Nuestra prosperidad depende de las inversiones seguras que hagamos no
solo en la infraestructura si no también en la salud, educación y
seguridad económica de todos los que viven dentro de nuestras fronteras.
En lugar de hacer retroceder el tiempo sobre le reforma de cuidado
médico, instamos al 112º Congreso a que trabajen juntos para
asegurar que los que viven y trabajan en nuestro país estén lo
suficientemente saludables para contribuir plenamente a nuestra economía
y sociedad.
“El Presidente Obama también notó que cientos de miles de estudiantes
indocumentados están sobresaliendo en nuestras escuelas y tienen las
destrezas y el deseo de mejorar nuestra sociedad pero viven cada día
bajo la amenaza de deportación. Esto no es solo una tragedia pero no
tiene ningún sentido.
El Congreso debe de proveerles a estos estudiantes un camino hacia la
ciudadanía, y tomar un paso mas allá al legalizar el estatus de sus
padres y miembros de sus comunidades – los millones de hombres y mujeres
indocumentados que hoy viven y trabajan en los Estado Unidos. Ellos son
una parte vital del plan para una recuperación económica plena. A lo
largo de nuestra historia, inmigrantes desde Albert Einstein y Sergey
Brin, co-fundador de Google, han desarrollado ideas innovadoras que han
revolucionado a nuestra sociedad. Los empresarios y trabajadores
inmigrantes contribuyen a que nuestras economías locales sean vibrantes.
Le urgimos al Presidente Obama y al Congreso que reformen nuestras leyes
migratorias para que las familias inmigrantes puedan ayudar a construir
una nación mas fuerte que pueda competir con el resto del mundo.
“Como observó Obama, los Estados Unidos ha sido la historia de personas
común y corrientes que se han atrevido a soñar y hacer cosas grandes.
Nuestro pasado, presente, y futuro depende de las familias inmigrantes
que creen en este sueño y buscan como integrarse a nuestra sociedad.
Deseamos trabajar con los oficiales electos y líderes comunitarios de
ambos partidos para lograr que los valores de la equidad, igualdad y
prosperidad sigan siendo la piedra angular de nuestra sociedad en el
próximo siglo y más allá.”
